Floral Serenade
This design was originally part of Morton Sundour's "Cumberland Prints" range and depicts clematis, tree peonies and stylised birds. Morton Sundour was a British textile manufacturer formed in Carlisle in 1914 and was best known for upholstery fabrics.
The pattern dates to the 20th century, but stylistically it is very reminiscent of the Georgian era's love of east Asian design and is closely related to hand-painted wallcoverings traded between China and Europe. These wall panels frequently incorporated details like trailing blossoms and birds, recurring themes with a close connection to nature, and became a staple ingredient of high-end interiors and an important element of western interior decoration. Showcasing the intricate harmony between flora and fauna, blooming peonies intertwine with the melodies of birdsong, inviting the viewer to experience the wonder of nature.
