Peacock Topiary
A joyful arrangement of manicured lawns, sculpted hedges, tulips and a proud, strutting peacock, this pattern is by the Silver Studio, a design practice based in Hammersmith, London. Founded in 1880 by Arthur Silver, the Silver Studio sold designs for items such as furnishing fabrics, wallpapers, tablecloths, rugs and carpets to a range of commercial customers both in Britain and abroad. It employed a number of designers, some of whom were well known in their own right, and others whose work remained anonymous. Originally created as a furnishing fabric of woven silk, the topiary pattern is the epitome of stately opulence and illustrates the stylisation of organic and natural forms that tied the Art Nouveau aesthetic together and characterised English interior design in the early 20th century.
