Date Palm Mural
Elijah Walton was an English Victorian painter, who debuted his work at the Royal Academy and the British Institution in the 1850s.
After moving to London, he married and travelled on honeymoon to the Alps and to Egypt, places that would provide him with subject matter for the rest of his life. Keeping a sketch record of his experiences in a Bedouin desert encampment, many of Walton's drawings and watercolours are almost impressionistic Egyptian landscapes and indigenous portraiture. This remarkable study of date palm trees with lush foliage is adapted from a watercolour sketch and could easily have been a preliminary or inspirational sketch for an illustrated book or larger painting. It conveys Walton's romantic vision of an almost dream-like, mirage landscape of the exotic land which inspired the artist.
